Hallmark Hogwash .

One of my favorite movies is 500 Days of Summer and I love the parts where Tom talks about how stupid writing cards is. The best thing you can take away from those scenes is when he says that cards are there so that we don't have to express ourselves. They can put words into our mouths, conveying to people a feeling that may not be there. Now, I can't say that this is entirely true, because I have found some truly amazing cards and I've underlined those sections that really hit me and ring true with my being. But I think that a lot of people, while looking for cards for people, get something they think just sounds nice, that says something along the lines of what they are "supposed" to say.

At what point will people be willing to just truly say what they mean? Cards are nice: they're fancy, printed elegantly, have fancy things like glitter and pop-ups and more. But beyond all the glitz and glam, what do the words say? Why is it so hard to sit down and just say what you truly mean? I wish that people were true to what they write.

Sometimes I feel like people are really elegant with their words, but the thing that really shows through is how they act around you, how they treat you, what they say about you when you're not listening. Cards make people feel good and are intended to, but may not always be an accurate display of sentiment.

Is this the cynic in me speaking? Maybe. Jaded? Perhaps. But I think that if people took the time to speak their mind, heart and soul instead of letting the card doing the talking, the world would be a better place.

  1. I've wanted to see that movie for quite some time - mainly because I am in love with Zooey Deschanel

    1. It's definitely a great movie and well worth watching... however don't expect a happy ending though; I think that's one of the really interesting parts about it!
