in the buff .

This week my brother is down at Virginia Tech getting orientated with my parental units and I've had the house to myself. It's been interesting -- and as always, a little bit strange. When I'm home alone, I enjoy it, but sometimes it's a bit lonely, and sometimes a bit unsettling or unnerving. I think it has something to do with the fact that you're so used to always having people there all the time and it's just strange to have such a large area devoid of any sort of life. All of a sudden the general maintenance responsibilities of the house are put upon you: water the flowers in the morning, get the mail, take out the trash, wash the dishes, empty the dehumidifier, turn on the house lights at night and turn them off in the morning. It kinda makes you realize that there's a lot of shit to be done all the time.

But apart from all of that, there is always that strange feeling of being in complete silence in the house. I tend not to like it so I usually am playing music or have the TV on while I'm doing things. Is this proof that just maybe human companionship is an absolute necessity of life? I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

However one of the best things about being home by yourself is being naked.

Yes, you read correctly.

There is no one else in the house. Pee with the bathroom door open, wash the dishes in the buff, and let yourself air dry after showers. Seriously, it is the best feeling in the world! It's also kind of weird to see yourself entirely naked in the mirror (other than in the bathroom for that split second right before you jump in the shower and hide behind the curtain).

We are all so used to wearing so many layers of clothing and sometimes you just need to forget about it. Imagine if Adam and Eve never ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil -- wouldn't we all be naked all the time? We wouldn't know any better. The first thing that happened when they ate from it was that they realized that they were naked. And so, I think that nakedness was intended to be celebrated. Now I think in society it is indicative of not having enough money to buy clothes, or something to be ashamed of, and perhaps some only view nakedness as a link to "dirty" and sexual activities. I don't really know.

So the next time you find yourself alone at home, don't be afraid to let it all hang out. Just -- make sure your blinds are drawn first.

  1. Chilling out naked when I'm alone in our apartment is so freeing. Seriously, it's the best. I thought it was weird at first, like Rachel on Friends did, but then I got used to it and was like "this rocks."
