welcome to restaurant life .

It occurred to me today that while everyone is celebrating the fact that it is Friday and that they get to enjoy their weekends and relax and veg out and just enjoy life, that I don't ever have this luxury in the summer. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, to the restaurant life.

Though I may no longer work in the Food and Beverage (F&B) department, and have since switched to another department at my same place of work, we all still have to work on that lovely schedule that constantly sacrifices your weekend with brutal severity.

It's difficult to work this way. Everyone is used to a 9-5, Monday to Friday schedule. Monday is one of my favourite days of the week, because I almost always have that day off. It makes it difficult to get together with people, even if they are few and far between. I can usually do something during the nights of the weekend, but I'm not generally one to go out too much, mainly because of the money issue. I know I need to save, and being that I'm graduating next year, I know I should save even more. Friday nights just aren't the same to me, and only mean that I have more work to come before my own "weekend."

So for your Nine-to-fivers out there, savor your weekends, enjoy your Friday nights, and make sure you do some extra relaxing for me, because I unfortunately do not get to indulge on these things on these particular days of the week. Though fear not -- I'll be kickin' it and relaxing while you're in the office on Monday and Tuesday. Woo.

  2. I feel your pain. I spent 20 years in the military often working 12 hour shifts with no regard for the weekend. Worse, the old rotating shift which went like this: 4 swing shifts (3 to 11PM) then 24 hours off followed by 4 mid shifts (11PM to 7AM) then 24 hours off and 4 day shifts (7AM to 3PM). The big reward for all that? 3 days off and back to work to start again. What people don't realize is the massive toll it takes on your body trying to adjust from mids to days in a single 24 hour period.

    Now that I am a Monday through Friday sort of guy, I really appreciate it. My Friday nights are spent mowing the yard with a few cold Coronas and catching up on DVR'd TV shows with my wife. Good times.

    1. Wow, Dave, seems like you had it way worse. I must admit in my days as a busser, I did work some 15, 16, and 17 hour shifts, but never had to work overnight. Granted, there were days when you'd get out and 2am and have to be back by 9 or 10am, and in those times I was thankful I lived so close to work and didn't have to drive an hour.

      The shifts you describe reminds me of flight attendants -- lots of time working nonstop, but then a break. Though I think their break amounts to several weeks...

  3. Well, I am a 9 - 5 Monday to Friday girl with my 'official' permanent job... and evenings and most weekends with my other half's business... so you can think of me working this weekend... and whole next week too... boooo! But hey ho, someone's got to pay for little life pleasures! : )
